Instructor Inking in Physics Classes with Ubiquitous Presenter

چکیده
1. ABSTRACT We analyze the use of digital ink by three instructors of introductory university physics classes, discussing how they organize their slides, the ways in which they ink, and how they support their dynamic classroom activity with instructor notes – a part of the Presenter (UP [1] and CP [2]) framework. We find modes of usage including using ink to explicitly link multiple representations; making prepared figures dynamic by animating them with ink; and preparing slides with sparse text or figures, then adding extensive annotations during class. We discuss each of these uses from a pedagogical standpoint. While the inking modes of other disciplines are not directly explored in this paper, we suggest that our analysis has relevance beyond physics.

A number of applications are available that are designed to enhance student engagement in the classroom through the use of Tablet PCs. The value of this goal is well documented, and researchers working with applications such as Classroom Presenter and DyKnow Vision have blazed the way in studying not only how best to deploy this technology, but also how to best teach with it in actual classroom...
متن کاملSeminar-Based Electromagnetics Education
In this paper, an innovative student seminar-based classroom practice is reported. The instructional process was illustrated by student-oriented theoretical inquiry of interested topics combined with traditional and emerging applications. Specifically, under the careful guidance of the instructor, every student or student group chose an EM topic of their interest and presented to the class; whi...

This paper describes two studies, one completed and one ongoing, that evaluate the use of Tablet PCs and a Tablet-PC-based classroom presentation system in an introductory computer science class. The presentation system, Classroom Presenter [2, 3], supports student wireless submission of digital ink answers to in-class exercises. In these studies, we evaluate the hypothesis that the use of such...

Much of the debate surrounding the use of lecture-based classes as a method for teaching science has focused on the passive role assumed by students in lecture (1, 2, 3). The communication channel is primarily instructor-to-student. Numerous studies have shown that student performance in science classes improves with increasing levels of active participation by students in classroom discussions...
